Some think that it's a terrible idea to mix family and business. This is true for some, but not for others. All families have their moments when they do not see eye to eye on something. This can be true in business as well. Everyone cannot arrive at the same decision in every situation. But this does not mean that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. There are several positives to working with family and here are three of them. 1) Family tradition. Developing a family business can give you one of the best family traditions PLUS it can present a very positive image to your customers. Family run companies impress people. Seeing generations pass on the knowledge of their trade from grandparent to grandchild can warm the heart of your business contacts. It creates a greater sense of trust. This can work with brick and mortar stores AND internet stores. Everyone loves family and tradition. When you combine it with a business it can be a beautiful thing. 2) Family time. By working together you are spending more time with your family. You will strengthen your relationship with each other, your reliance upon each other, and your trust for each other. You will share more of your life with one another. It is difficult to find the time that you want to spend with your family. Parents go to work and children go to school. The kids are off to activities after school and then it’s time for dinner and then it's time for bed. There is hardly enough time to see each other except when you are passing one another in the hallway. Luckily for those who work with family, you not only see your loved ones more often but you will interact with each other on a regular basis and develop a more fulfilling relationship. 3) Family memories. When you work with family members you are building special memories with them. In addition to creating memories during the holidays and trips to the zoo, your family business can become one of the best memories you will have. You can remember how grandpa used to smell like woodchips after working the lathe in his woodshop. You can remember making delicious foods with your aunt at the bakery. These are joys that stay with you forever. It’s an essential part of life to enjoy being around those you care for. Working with family gives you more time with those who are important to you. So even though you may not see eye to eye with uncle Bob on which napkins to carry for the pizzeria, you have to remember to appreciate the time you share with him. Having your children grow up around family members when they stop by the hardware store after school is priceless. You teach love, life and business all at one time. When you compare the benefits and drawbacks of working with family, the tradtions and memories that you are creating added to the time that you will have together, the benefits will be the winner and so will you.
